I visited two poetry events in Glebe in Sydney on 12 February 2013. The venerable Gleebooks hosted yet another poetry book launch, this time Chris Andrews’ book «Lime Green Chair», winner of the seventh annual Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize. A respectable middle-aged crowd, free wine, messy food.
Soon afterwards in the rear garden of the neighboring bookstore Sappho’s, four poets read at the regular monthly poetry reading organised by Toby Fitch: Ann Vickery, Nick Keys, Jess Wilkinson and Martin Harrison. Busy bar (you paid for drinks), huge attentive mostly young crowd: poetry like it used to be. Photo above, Toby Fitch does the honours. Below, Gleebooks, and below that, part of the large crowd at Sappho’s. And there are thirteen photos from the Sappho’s reading on my Home Site. Check it out.
