Woollen Robots?

They may be Space Invaders… they may be robots… hard to tell… the Intentionalist Fallacy rears its head again. What was the artist thinking? Was the one without legs who looks drunk meant to be that way (pun on “legless”?), or is it meant to represent some birth defect (“sympathy, tragedy”)? And there’s something inappropriate… distasteful… about alien creatures made from wool — don’t you think?
Or are they just cute?

Who is John Tranter?

John Tranter’s career as a poet has spanned half a century: he compiled six anthologies of other writers’ work totalling over two thousand pages, and committed more than twenty books of his own poetry. He and Philip Mead edited the «Penguin Book of Modern Australian Poetry» (1993), the standard text in its field for two decades. He founded the widely-read international literary magazine Jacket in 1997 and granted it to the University of Pennsylvania in 2010. In 2004 he founded the vast project the Australian Poetry Library, which went public in May 2011, making available more than forty thousand Australian poems free to view on the Internet. Colophon:

The main text font is meant to be the elusive New Fournier BP from sunny Lausanne, Switzerland, designed by François Rappo, based on a font cut in the mid-1700s by Parisian type designer Pierre Simon Fournier the Younger, believe it or not. It’s the large font on the banner, reading “Tranter’s Journal.” Thanks, François: it’s a beautiful piece of design.

But alas, webfont technology is not as workable as it should be. I have given up trying to show New Fournier BP in the body of this Journal.

A font which you will see instead is good old Georgia, designed by Matthew Carter and hinted to fit neatly to the pixel grid of computer screens, and influenced by his long-ago and very clever Charter, and just occasionally you may meet with Droid Sans, designed by Steve Matteson, optimised for use on small screens such as computer devices using the Android system, after which it is named.
