Photos: Square Dance, Oklahoma, 1940

There are enough human stories in these four snapshots to fill a novel. «The Grapes of Wrath», anyone? Square dance, McIntosh County, Oklahoma, 1940. Photos by the wonderful photographer Russell Lee, 1903-1986. These public domain images are held by the US Library of Congress. The color had faded; I did my best to restore it. JT.

  1. Hi John, those are among my (five thousand or so) favourite Russell Lee shots. I revere his abundant genius, particularly the ability to get close, put people at ease, while miraculously also allowing his subjects dignity and respect. That dance party must have been a hoot. Interesting you’ve tried to “improve” the colour — though reaching into the time machine to turn the past back into itself can be tricky.
